Motorists advised to avoid M20 near Folkestone following lorry fire

MOTORISTS are being advised to avoid the coastbound M20 outside Folkestone this afternoon after a lorry caught fire on the carriageway.

Kent Police was called at 12.45pm after reports of the vehicle on fire underneath a bridge on the coastbound side of the road at junction 12 near Cheriton.

Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at junction 11 and those heading towards the Port of Dover are being advised to use the M2 until the incident has been dealt with.

The bridge over the motorway has also been closed to traffic while Kent Fire and Rescue Service tackle the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews are using a main jet from a bridge to tackle a lorry fire carrying animal feed.

"An ambulance is in attendance and the HGV driver is being treated for slight smoke inhalation."

UPDATE: At 4.30pm traffic was still being diverted as the emergency services work to recover the burnt-out lorry from the motorway.
