The gala was held at Margate Winter Gardens on Friday and organised by the town’s boxing club.
Winter Gardens security guards were quickly on the scene after it was reported people were hitting each other with bottles, furniture and even a man’s crutches.
On the night Margate Boxing Club coach Peter Lee was being honoured for his 50 years of service to the sport.
Before the 86-year-old could tuck in to his posh meal and watch 12 bouts of boxing the punch-up started in the audience.
Peter, of Park Lane, Birchington, said: “I was speechless, shocked and surprised. It was going to be a good night with all the Margate boys against fighters from other clubs across southern England.
“Before we’d even started a fight broke out in the upper gallery. It ruined our night. I’d have liked to go up to them and give them a whack but quite rightly you can’t do that."
After the first half there was a break in the boxing when Mr Lee was presented with a plaque for his 50 years’ contribution to the sport.
After the bar was closed in preparation for the second half it was discovered that two men were fighting in the closed bar.
Despite this, Mr Lee believes that boxing helps curb violence. He said: “None of those fighting were members of the club – they were part of the audience. One of the benefits of boxing is discipline.
Boxing is tightly controlled and regulated. Fighters learn to box according to the rules.” Steve Davis, managing director of Thanet Leisureforce, which runs the Winter Gardens, said they are assessing the venue's security situation.
