SCHEDULED flights will return to Manston airport in May with a new route between Thanet and Edinburgh.

Owner Infratil and airline Flybe announced a deal today to send a flight from each of the airports once a day.

  1. Flybe will be flying from Manston to Edinburgh

The new route, with a journey time of just 80 minutes, will be served by Flybe’s 78-seat Bombardier Q-400 aircraft.

Matt Clarke, chief executive of Kent International Airport, said: "I’m sure this route will be hugely popular with people in Kent because Edinburgh is such a great place to visit with its history, culture and, of course, its world-famous festivals."

Mike Rutter, Flybe’s chief commercial officer, said: "We’re delighted to add this new service to the south east from Edinburgh and to be the first carrier to offer travellers a scheduled service out of Kent International.

"We expect our new route to be popular with business travellers and those taking holidays or weekends away and wanting their budgets to go as far as possible. We advise people to book early to take advantage of the lowest possible fares."

Mr Clarke will step down from his post in March to be replaced by Tom Wilson.

“Oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here we go again, it will never work. Many have tried and failed, in the past. What next, another ferry service from Ramsgate? I keep up to date with news from Thanet, as I lived and grew up in Margate for 22 years. and I am pleased I left. When will the people of Thanet wake up and appreciate Thanet is Dead, it died years ago.”

    “Alan, Maybe you have trouble reading;
    no problem with edinburgh flights
problem with the airports future plans, which are based on 24/7 operations
if thanet is basing its future on and industry that has net never turned a profit throughout its existence
far from retiring, and i do this as i actually care about the area
    i won't be going anywhere.

you seem to be the selfish one old chap, sitting quietly in broadstairs wishing your ramsgate neighbours sleepless nights and disturbed days.

Perhaps thanet has rotted because of people like you Alan .”

    “Steve Higgins
What the hell have night flights got to do with day flights to Edinburgh?
You really want this to fail so Thanet will rot even further than it has already, what a selfish bloke you are.
You have only recently moved here, you should have done your homework before you moved, are you retired and bored?
Thanet needs jobs and if you don't then bugger off to where you came from or somewhere away from an airport, or is that the reason you moved ? it gives you something to moan about to pass the days.”

“Michael, others, a few flights in the middle of the day is fine, but will not make the airport profitable. Infratil bought the airport in the midst of the biggest budget airline boom this country has ever seen and still failed to win any passenger business. One flight a day will not make a dent in the money spent keeping the airport operational. Are these "temporary cheduled" flights just delaying the inevitable? Remember the Jersey flights by Flybe were lauded as the "return of scheduled flights to Manston" by Infratil, and were subsequently pulled from service in 2010. Is this because they were too successful?

The airport owners have said the airport will close unless night flights are granted. The airport owners have asked for unrestricted night time operations which would allow 747's to land and take off at 3am if they so wished.

I too chose to live in Ramsgate, but under the protection of a night time flying policy which discouraged night time flying. If this policy is changed for the good of the airport it will erode, sorry, eradicate, any quality of life for those underneath the flightpath.”

“My son and daughter in law live in Ramsgate and the Ryanair Prestwick to Stanstead flight is great but Stanstead to anywhere is a nightmare. The distance from Ayr to Edinburgh is similar as Stanstead to Ramsgate but the journey is about a third of the time and a fifth of the cost. Thank you flybe.”

    “Steve Higgins:

Manston airport has been there since 1916 - people shouldn't buy a house that sits under an existing flightpath and then complain about the aircraft passing overhead!”

“My gripe about the overall fare is that the so-called one-way price was stated as being (from) £24.99 including all taxes and charges.

Show me the flights at that price, and I'll visit my Grand-daughter in Edinburgh.

Airlines are notoriously infamous at coaxing us into their fare "trap", concealing all the hidden extras until the last minute.

Until there's absolute transparency, I shall always view their "come-ons" with suspicion.

I am pleased that something might become of Manston - it's been too long in the doldrums since the departure of the RAF. EuJet and Wiggins made a mess of things, so let's hope that the new guys have better fortunes.

A buzzing , lively airport will create far more jobs, with greater diversity.”

“for all thoughs moaning people of the surrounding villages of manston airport.. stop your moaning about progression and the future of manston airport and the planes flying over your houses. im sure you didnt moan when the airport belonged to the raf with all its fighter planes coming and going making alot more noise then a few cargo planes do today. what i dont understand is why are you moaning about the airport it gives us jobs and security to provide for our familys. it also puts us back on the map, which is surely good for us all. so please just stop moaning and get on with your lives and let the airport florish and let thanet get better.. so infratil and flybe good luck i really hope it works for you and thanet”
