JAMES O’Brien, 38, of Saltbox Hill, Biggin Hill, has pleaded guilty to hunting wild animals with dogs after being caught hare-coursing on the South Downs at Angmering Park, between Worthing and Arundel, in February.

O’Brien appeared at Worthing Magistrates Court on Wednesday last week (July 29), along with Thomas Joseph Connors, 31, from Wallington, Surrey, Edward Mark Connors, 40, from Horley, Surrey, and James Robb, 24, from Stanmore, Middlesex.

All four were each fined £200 and must pay costs of £250 and victim surcharges of £15. They were told to give up the dogs.

“It is good news that hare coursers are being rounded up and convicted - but what about the timid attitude to fox hunts in some areas? I have just heard that the Percy huntsman has had the case against him dismissed in spite of eye eitness evidence of a terrified fox chased to exhaustion point. Would he have got off so lightly if he had been an ordinary Northern "worklng man" with a pair of terriers or lurchers?”
