A TONBRIDGE man carried out two vicious beatings in the same nightclub – even turning on his own girlfriend, a court heard.

Paul Murray, 29, of Somerhill Road, was out for an evening with his girlfriend Jodi Marsh on August 8 last year when the pair argued.

She left him to go to SOS nightclub where he later found her dancing with other people, including Bradley Davison.

Consumed with jealousy, Murray grabbed Ms Marsh's arm, trying to pull her out of the club. He then punched Davison in the face.

Four months earlier Murray had been at the same nightclub where he punched Rashed Ujjaman in the face.

Prosecutor Diane Ginever told Sevenoaks magistrates: "Mr Ujjaman fell to the floor and knocked a table over as he did so."

As Mr Ujjaman lay bruised and beaten on the floor, Murray continued to kick and punch him.

Ms Ginever added: "He later told police Mr Ujjaman had provoked him by jumping in front of him and bumping into him."

Mr Ujjaman, formerly a bar worker at Wetherspoons in Sevenoaks, was cut on his head, ear and shin. His lip also needed one stitch.

He said: "I've now left my job because I no longer feel safe. After that, I never travel to Tonbridge. It has scared me."

Defending Murray, Andrew Main said: "He had consumed a lot of alcohol that night and he's not a man familiar with drinking to excess.

"He has had a difficult childhood and was taken into care when his parents were incarcerated.

"There was nothing on his record before his relationship with Ms Marsh and he has learned a lot from the experience."

Murray admitted assault and two assaults causing actual bodily harm.

Magistrates ordered Murray to carry out an 18-month community sentence which will include 300 hours' community work.

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to Mr Davison and £190 to Mr Ujjaman and £200 prosecution costs.

“It's unusual to see drunkeness used as part of a defence. Prior to this I had only heard the excuse "I had to do it, I was drunk" uttered by Eddie (Adrian Edmonson) in an episode of 'Bottom'. I wonder if this type of defence could be used in motoring offences? Part of the reason for custodial sentences (apart from punishment) is to protect the general public. I would rather see benefit cheats doing community sentences and violent offenders in jail.”
