SHE'S in pole position and that's official.

Kristina Walker, a 25-year-old Birchington-based osteopath, has just won the coveted UK PPC (Professional Pole Championship) award in Birmingham and she's head over heels with joy.

Kristina is a former gymnast and took up what is becoming recognised as a sport four years ago while studying osteopathy at Surrey university.

She practices for competitions in dance studios and at the Broadstairs home she shares with partner John Wray, who accompanies her to the competitions.

Kristina said: "I don't think you're ever going to get away from the men watching girls on a pole in a club. But that is worlds away from what I do. It's completely different. They tend to use gyrations, my style is more balletic."

As an osteopath Katrina is well aware of the health benefits of poling, as it is called, which she is now qualified to teach at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Although she does not recommend many of her many elderly osteopathy clients to give it a try she does suggest some clients have a go – even men.

"Anyone can try it. I've taught youngsters of 15 or 16 (with parental permission) and my oldest student was in her 70s. Men tend to approach it differently to women; they are more interested in strength, rather than the dance aspect.

"Poling is great for building flexibility and strength in the back, arms and legs. The arms get a lot of exercise because they are taking the weight but the whole body benefits. It builds lots of core strength. Research has showed it can help with spine problems. The poses gently move the discs apart and take the pressure off."
