Join Friends of Dover for trip to Fromelles
THE Friends of The Dover War Memorial Project are gauging interest in a day coach trip to see the commemoration of the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery in France on July 19 this year.
The event will mark the completion of the archaeological excavation and reinterment of 250 British and Australian soldiers, who died at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916.
All but one of the soldiers, who were buried in a number of mass graves after the conflict, have been reburied in individual graves in the new cemetery. The final reburial will take place at the commemoration ceremony. The mass graves were discovered in 2008.
The Friends of the Dover War Memorial Project are considering hiring a minibus or coach, depending on demand, to take people from Dover and Shepway districts to the event in the early morning before returning home in the evening.
The initial plan is for the party to be at the ceremony by 9.30am local time, then to visit Ypres for lunch and a few hours free time, possibly taking in a sightseeing tour of the famous Cloth Hall in the town centre.
After staying for the Menin Gate ceremony held each evening, the party would catch the ferry home from Calais.
Secretary Andy Cooper said: "At this stage we are looking only to gauge interest in a long day out that we anticipate will cost in the region of £45.00 per person if we can fill a 50-seater coach."

A decision on whether the trip will go ahead will be made no later than the middle of April, and those who have registered an interest will be asked to pay up in full by the end of April.
