THE pedals are about to start turning on a new cycling group for those who want to take things at a more leisurely pace.

Ashford Cycling Club is the brainchild of Jon Young and was set up to fill a gap he believed was missing in the town.

Although the club is still to hold its first ride, the 24-year-old hopes that by the time the month is through members will have donned helmets and bicycle clips for a jaunt through the Kent countryside.

Mr Young, of Springfield Road in Goddington Park, said: "It's quite a relaxed group.

WE require quality housing for professional clients. We will discount our fees to 8% if you mention This is Kent.

"I just wanted to get people together who share an interest.

"As long as they've got a helmet and high-visibility jacket they will be welcome along."

The plan is members will meet up a couple of times a month to enjoy a trip lasting a few hours, stopping off at a pub along the way for refreshments.

Each outing will involve a different route.

Mr Young only set up the group a couple of weeks ago, but it already boasts 25 members. It is free to join.

He hopes over time numbers will swell to a couple of hundred.

Although there is already a club in the town for push-bike enthusiasts, Ashford Wheelers Cycling Club, Mr Young said his new group was not in competition with it.

He has no immediate plans to hold races and the ethos of his club is more about getting together to enjoy the countryside and surrounding villages.
