INDEPENDENT candidate Ann Barnes spent £70,000 on her bid to be elected Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, it has emerged today.

The financing of the former Kent Police Authority chairman's campaign included £50,000 of her own money, left to her following the death of her father.

There is a growing sense this morning that Ms Barnes will have attracted strong support in yesterday's election.

Speaking at the count in Dover earlier, her campaign manager Peter Carroll said: "The impression I'm getting is we've done well.

    “I do not know what the money was spent on then. I only received one leaflet from one of the candiates, nothing from any of the others. Wonder why their was a poor turnout. Also 70K investiment means that with the salary on offer the bresk even point is under 2 years”
