AN INDEPENDENT café scored an internet hit last week when it criticised one of the biggest brands in the world.

Googies launched a scathing attack on Starbucks last Wednesday by daubing its advertising board with the words "we pay our taxes and still make better coffee than Starbucks".

Within four hours of posting a picture of the board on Facebook, more than 1,500 people had "liked" the photo, 230 had "shared" it and 60 had commented on it.

It comes as the international coffee chain defended itself amid reports it had paid just £8.6m in corporation tax in the UK over 14 years and nothing in the last three years.

The majority of comments on Facebook backed Googies, of Rendezvous Street, Folkestone.

Amie Louise Landsborough said it "rocked", while Martin Smith said it offered the "best coffee around".

But Serena Boo said: "Hmmm bothered if they pay tax? Nope. Good coffee?... That's all I need lol."
