TUNBRIDGE Wells resident Mark Hughes has been named the town's biggest sports fan.

The Wells FC regular loves the beautiful game and he has scooped the top prize in Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery's competition, The Spectator.

"I sent a photo in of my children to try and raise the profile of the football team," Hughes said. "I wasn't expecting to win it. When people see the exhibition, maybe it will make the team a little bit more known."

Hughes' picture of his son Timothy, 11, and daughter Elizabeth, seven, dressed in their Tunbridge Wells FC kit will take pride of place in The Spectator exhibition at the art gallery.

Hughes said his children love going down to the Culverden.

"We've been going for two seasons now," he said. "As my children are getting a bit older they are certainly enjoying it. It makes the afternoon, especially in the winter, a bit better being outdoors – rather than sitting indoors and doing nothing. The kids are able to run about down at the Culverden. They're able to play a bit of football. It's not like a big stadium. It's a lot more relaxed and child friendly."

The museum was inundated with competition entries and many of those will make up the exhibition. There will also be a focus on certain sporting individuals in town.

"We had a great response to our 'Wall of Fans' appeal," museum manager Jo Wiltcher said. "We were delighted to see photographs of such a wide range of sports fans here in Tunbridge Wells. The museum team has also been out and about photographing local sports fans and we've met some real characters at the various sports venues that we've visited. You can see our photographs and yours by visiting The Spectator."

Cllr Jane March, cabinet member with responsibility for tourism, leisure and economic development added: "Tunbridge Wells is fortunate to have so many great sports clubs, with loyal local supporters. We hope that the exhibition inspires you to go out and visit some of these venues for yourself."

The Spectator exhibition will run from Saturday, June 2 to Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery. You can find out more details by going to the museum's website at www.tunbridgewellsmuseum.org
