History fan hopes to solve druid mystery
MYSTERY surrounds a recently found certificate awarded to a Folkestone resident at the turn of the 20th century on his initiation into a druids' order.
A yellowing parchment featuring a black and white etching of a bearded man in a flowing gown playing a harp notes that Charles H Russell has been accepted into the Ancient Order of Druidism.
The document was evidently signed and witnessed by the order's Cinque Ports Lodge on September 8, 1904. The signatures of Charles Freestone, Walter J Standing and John McLaren appear in the certificate.
It reads: "This is to certify Charles H Russell of Folkestone was this day elected a member of this Cinque Ports Lodge and regularly initiated into the mysteries of druidism."
The certificate was passed on to resident Laura Poulton, 41, of Broadmead Village, Folkestone, who has an interest in genealogy, for her to find more information on the mysterious order.
The mum of two said: "I've never heard of these druids before, I'd love it if a Herald reader could help with more information.
"A customer came into the store and gave it to me as he knows I've an interest in this kind of thing.
"I've tried looking for Charles Russell and found one who was an upholsterer but I haven't a clue if it was the same person.
"I've been told the Cinque Ports Lodge were maybe some kind of society but I don't know much more than that. Maybe they helped some of the poorer people in the town at the time? I don't know.
"It's so interesting and part of our own history, I've tried researching and asking around but haven't really got anywhere.
"Hopefully someone will see this and get in touch."
Mrs Poulton, who recently became a grandmother for the first time, works as a lighting consultant at DC Homewood in Folkestone. She is hoping to track down any remaining family of Mr Russell.
She said: "This document could end up going to auction as it seems so rare, I'd love to see it returned to the rightful owners."
