ONE Gillingham player who at the moment looks likely to start the first game of the season against Cheltenham is Danny Spiller.

He’s agreed terms on a short-term five-month deal, but is sure to be offered something more if he continues to impress his manager.

Andy Hessenthaler said: “If he does well he will stay until the end of the season and probably longer,” said the manager.

“He is hungry to play football and when I offered him an initial five months he nearly snapped my hands off. If he plays like I think he will I predict he will be player of the year.

“That’s easy for me to say now, I know, but you can see the fire in his belly and for me that is so important.”
