CLUBBERS were left all dressed up with nowhere to go after seafront nightclub New York shut for the second time in two months.

The Central Parade club closed unexpectedly in December but opened again in an unannounced re-launch after 20 days.

The current closure was announced in a note on the door which blamed roof repairs – but not on its Facebook page.

Former club manager Adrian Lee said he was told by club bosses that the venue was closing.

He said: "I was told I was being made redundant and the club was closing due to a lack of funds – but then they reopened two weeks later with a different manager.

"I'm disappointed. It could be a great little venue.

"I've already got another job in London, so it's no skin off my nose now, but I'm surprised to hear it has closed again.

"They seem to be having problems."

New York, previously known as Talk, opened at the end of July last year in what promoters described as a £25,000 renovation, but faced a series of high-profile snubs by celebrities booked for the venue.

Chart-topping hip hop act Wretch 32 pulled out of a hotly promoted Hallowe'en gig, then Celebrity Big Brother contestant Jack Tweed – who was paid £1,000 to appear at the club – left after just 30 minutes for rival venue Vivid in the High Street.

Karl Ahmad, who runs Vivid, said: "It is a tough time of year for everyone but they do seem to be having a bad run of it.

"I wouldn't want to wish ill of anyone.

"We are obviously competing for a small market, but times are tight, people are spending less and it's a small town.

"The town's probably not big enough to support two clubs."

Despite repeated calls to club bosses Sandra Veizaga and Doug Laurence, the Times could not reach either of them for comment before we went to press.
