THE most stunning architecture and historical sites will be open to visitors for free as part of the Heritage Open Days.

The programme of events, organised by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Tonbridge Civic Society, begins on Saturday, September 11, when venues in and around the town will be open to the public.

More than 20 historical houses and gardens in the borough that are usually either closed or charge admission will be open for visitors to explore.

The Oast Theatre in Tonbridge will be offering backstage access throughout the weekend and Downderry Nursery in Hadlow will be leading guided tours.

Tonbridge Castle will play host to the annual medieval fair as well as conducting partial tours of the Gatehouse.

Councillor Martin Coffin, cabinet member for leisure, culture and youth, said: "This is the one time in the year when local people can really see some of this borough's marvellous heritage."

A full programme is available at Tonbridge Gateway or from the council's website, www.tmbc .gov.uk and more details from www.heritageopendays.org.uk
