A RUSTHALL mother has set up a family mediation business to give couples who have separated the chance to split amicably.

Helen Biggerstaff, who has eight years' experience as a solicitor in family law, said the process – especially when children were involved – could be messy.

But with the guidance of a mediator, issues such as children, finance and property, can be worked through "to the benefit of everyone".

The mother-of-three, who is a governor at St Paul's Primary School, said: "As a mediator I see them both together and sort out practicalities together, as opposed to what happens with solicitors, who see them individually.

"With solicitors it can be so unfriendly and I don't think it helps things.

"When you split you have a tremendous feeling of losing control. With a family mediator you can move forward from a horrible time and it is really beneficial when children are involved.

"It is the couples themselves who ultimately make the decisions about their future – as a mediator I do not impose decisions on the parties, unlike a court."

Mrs Biggerstaff is a member of the Family Mediator Association.
