PLANS to hand over ownership of the popular woods and lake in Sherwood are one step closer to completion.

The 47-acre site at the heart of Sherwood was bought by Town and Country Housing Group last year.

On May 30 contracts were exchanged with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council which agreed to take control of the area as part of a land swap deal with the housing association.

In exchange, the housing group has secured pockets of land in Sherwood and Ramslye from the council and can focus on redeveloping the estate as part of the regeneration plan for Sherwood which was approved by the borough council's planning committee last month.

Borough council leader David Jukes said: "I believe this demonstrates the council's commitment to keeping this fantastic facility available for the benefit of the whole community."

But Friends of Sherwood Lake chairman John Chappell was not happy about the situation because the agreement meant the borough council would not own the site outright and Town and Country would still run the land.

His group achieved town green status for the site and believed they should have control of it.

He said: "The Friends of Sherwood Lake should be running the common land it achieved."

Completion of contracts will take place later this year.
