Group creates a peerless gallery
THE future is yellow for the Herne Bay Pier Trust.
After complaining that there was a shortage of galleries for artists in the town, the pier campaigners have created their own.
The bright yellow Herne Bay Pier Trust Gallery on the seafront in Central Parade, opposite the clocktower, was officially opened today.
The Trust's deputy chairman, Andrea Leach, 46, said: "This is a great example of businesses and community groups working together to improve Herne Bay.
"There was a clear need to create a visible presence for the Herne Bay Pier Trust. We hope it can act as a hub for the town's cultural scene.
"We are planning an exciting programme of exhibitions by artists and community groups throughout the summer."
Among the first exhibitors are international artist and photographer Brian Westbury and Bay artist Jan Cook.
Mr Westbury is showing his collection Winter in Herne Bay/Summer in Kyoto.
Lecturer Jan is displaying her Home And Away mixed media collection, including mirror plates. The exhibition runs until May 9.
The trust has acquired the premises thanks to Wilbee and Son estate agents.
The gallery is open from 11am to 6pm, Thursday to Sunday.
The Pier Trust is hunting for other artists and groups. To exhibit at its gallery call Andrea Leach on 07802 630871 or e-mail him at andrea.leach@yahoo.co.uk.
Herne Bay Pier Trust needs 1,000 members, each paying £10, to raise £10,000 for its fighting fund to rebuild the town's pier. To enrol, visit www.hernebaypiertrust.co.uk or call at the new gallery.
