Grab a Free Comic at Whatever Comics
Whatever Comics in Canterbury will once again be playing host to the worldwide event Free Comic Book Day, which this year takes place on 5 May.
A whole host of colourful comic book characters, superheroes and villains will be wandering the streets of Canterbury and in the shop to give away some of the 42 different titles on offer this year. Among those dressing up and joining in the fun will be shop owner Manny Armario, and local actress Karol Steele who will be taking time out from her role on the new Les Miserables movie shooting in Chatham and Greenwich. This is the third year in a row Karol has given a helping hand to the shop - in 2010 Karol appeared as Superwoman, and last year she helped out dressed as Poison Ivy. This year's costume is a closely-guarded secret but she will be once again be accompanied by her dog Ted, dressed as Superdog.
Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. This event is designed to encourage new readers to discover the worlds created by the graphic novel and to introduce old fans of comic books to discover new titles. It also celebrates the independent comic book specialty shops because each one is unique in its community, with a style and personality all its own. Whatever Comics is the only comic book shop in Kent to participate in this event.
Manny said, "The past couple of years' we have been involved with this have been really successful - in 2010 we ran out of give away comics just after lunch, and last year we had so many people in the shop we had to limit the giveaways to just four per person. My advice to you is if you want to come along to the event, be nice and early!"
