the yellow and black team colours was Gemma Collins who braved freezing
conditions to take part in Ashford Tri Club's Mountain Bike Duathlon held at
Kingswood, Ashford, on Sunday, 23 February.
The nutritiously
challenging event involved the athletes taking on a 3km cross country run, a 14km
off road bike and then repeating the 3km run course for a second time. Gemma,
who is a busy working Mum, set off to a great start, pushing herself to the
limit on the first run.
She continued to build upon
a solid start by putting in an absolutely amazing ride on her new Vitus
mountain bike. After this she flew the final run to take first lady and 8th
place overall. Clearly Gemma has a skill of multi-sport and will go far in this
field if she chooses.
After the race she said:
'The final leg was tough. I have a lot of admiration for people who regularly
race like this. It was such a fun and well organised event.'
Three other PMR@Toachim House riders braving freezing
conditions were Harry Godding, Rhys Clegg and Jez McCann who all rode in the
final series race of the South East Road Race League held at the Cyclopark in
Gravesend.
event drew in an elite field of riders and made for a hard days racing for the
three fresh back from their winter break. Halfway through the 90 minute race
six riders had broken clear of the field, with Jamie Pine (Pedal Heaven RT)
eventually taking the win ahead of Jake Martin (Kingsnorth International) after
an impressive ride where the two managed to lap the field.
Back in the bunch the three
team mates had been unable to make any of the earlier moves but still had hopes
of snatching 7th position. All three riders made attempts to break
away, with some moves looking promising, yet the peleton seemed determined to
take it to a bunch sprint. With this in mind the trio set about organising
themselves; Harry led out the sprint before falling back to 14th
after his efforts whilst Jez and Rhys remained safely tucked out of the wind
until the last moment finishing 9th and 10th
respectively.
Rhys summed it up well
saying Not bad for the first race. I'm now buzzing and can't wait to race
again!'
For their first race of the
season all of the three young riders should be pleased with their efforts, but
they are ever looking forward and looking to improve as their race fitness
returns over the coming weeks.
