RADIO and TV celebrity Gloria Hunniford swapped broadcasting for bricklaying when she donned hard hat and trowel to help launch Hever School's Buy a Brick fundraising campaign.

After opening the school fete on Saturday, she urged visitors to sponsor their own engraved brick as a permanent legacy to two new classrooms the school is having built in September.

They responded with £200 donated on the day.

Head teacher Caroline Powell said: "It was an absolutely fantastic, beautiful day, very well attended and, as a combined event with the village, was bigger and better than previous years."

Money is still being counted for total funds raised, but Miss Powell said she was confident it would exceed last year's total of £3,000. The fete was full of traditional ingredients, including a dog show, children's dancing displays, tractor rides and a variety of stalls.
