Gloom lifted by tourism 'boom'
TOURISM is proving to be a major part in Shepway's ability to beat the economic downtown, recent figures show.
Chris Kirkham, manager of Discover Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh, told Folkestone Town Council that requests for holiday and leisure information have reached record levels at a meeting last week.
Mr Kirkham said the most recent official information, covering 2009, showed that value and volume of tourism had increased significantly in the three preceding years. He said he expected the programme of events planned for 2012 to provide an extra boost.
He added: "As for 2010 and 2011, while most tourism businesses admit that they were rollercoaster years, many say overall trading results were reasonably rewarding – even rather better than expected.
