FOLKESTONE Academy's visual and performing arts faculties have been granted a coveted award.

The school received a gold-level Artsmark, the highest available from Arts Council England, after showing j udges evidence of its art curriculum and how it is included in the timetable.

The Artsmark was introduced in 2001 to encourage schools to increase the range of arts education provision, both in the curriculum and through out-of-house learning activities.

In the past the school has delivered a series of workshops for youngsters through its extra-curricular programme.

Artists and performers such as Suki Chan, Samantha Saunders and JP Omari have all taken part and it recently ran an special event which ended with a performance piece including film, visual effects, dance, drama, costume design and music.

Folkestone Academy principal Sean Heslop said: "We are delighted with our gold award.

"We have always been very proud of the quality of work our students produce and now it's particularly pleasing to see that, in national terms, it is recognised to be of the very highest standard."

The award will be valid for three years, during which time the school will aim to maintain its range of arts education.

Feedback from the Artsmark team on the school's application said: "You demonstrated an excellent commitment to providing high-quality arts provision that is embedded across your curriculum and we would like to congratulate you on the hard work and commitment which went into achieving this respected award."
