Thanet Times

USUALLY writing this article is fairly straightforward. I hear about a gig or a new band that's coming out of Thanet/Kent, do some homework on them and then pow... job done!

I enjoy writing it and I hope you, the reader, get something out of it too.

So why have I been sat here for ages and can't think of what to write? Well, when you are a friend of the band you are writing about, you are a big fan of their music and they give you some sad news, then finding the right words comes a little harder....

Alternative band Floors and Walls, who have been smashing out their own unique brand of hard rock, MCing, melodic guitars and soulful, yet hard-hitting lyrics, are calling it a day after nearly six years, which has included some amazing performances all around the UK, a global battle of the bands victory and more catchy, infectious tunes than most mortals can handle!

With three of the members, namely Alex (vocals), Dom (guitar) and Adam (drums), all from Thanet, the boys quickly built up a large following in the area and subsequently when they relocated to Brighton, hometown of Ian (bass), they did it all again. How?

Marrying the streetwise British punk-style of bands like The Jam to the plausibly grime-based delivery of Dizzie Rascal is one way.

Sounding like a cross between Rage Against The Machine and Plan B is another.

Couple this with their raucous stage show, the sheer passion in their delivery and as stated earlier their incredibly catchy tunes, and it's a simple equation to a great gig.

So, the guys are playing one final gig at Margate's Westcoast Bar, their home from home and still their favourite place to play (at their last show there they had more than 300 people through the door), this Saturday.

And, as a special thank-you to all the fans that have supported them over the years, they will be playing an extended set so fans can hear their full back catalogue live one last time.

Main support for the evening are Tyrannosaurus Alan, an eclectic seven-piece from Medway/Canterbury/Thanet, who bring together a beautiful array of ska, punk, reggae and hip hop to create a sound somewhere between classic Capdown, Dizzee Rascal and Sonic Boom Six. It's all done with muchos, muchos big brass energy, passionate vocal hooks and fantastic musicianship. You must see them live.

Also on the bill are Riskee and the Ridicule, from Kent/London, who were formed from contrasting musical backgrounds to make a new, exciting and unique sound.

The band's catchy hooks and tight harmonies, combined with clever, witty, observational lyrics, provide a sound that is fresh and that will appeal to a wide variety of music lovers.

Opening the show are Welsh ska/punk lunatics Detached.

These guys will be playing an aggressive, if not groundbreaking brand of skacore, and the six-piece ska/punk outfit always manages to ooze boundless amounts of energy onstage.

Tickets for this final show are £5 advance (either from the venue or online at www.wegottickets. com) or £7 on the door. Doors open at 7pm and it's an all-ages show.

Come down and be a piece of local music history.

Better still listen to someone who knows what he's talking about – drummer Mark Richardson, of Skunk Anansie: "Floors and Walls are BRILLIANT! I can't get their tunes out of my skull. It's an amazing package and what a frontman!"

Enough said – see ya at the front!
