Flight of fancy brings Kerry from Australia

ONE Glitter Band fan went out of her way to show her support for the group over the Christmas period.

Kerry McGill, 53, left Australia and jumped aboard an aeroplane for the first time in her life to follow the band on their festive tour – and stayed in Tunbridge Wells.

She said the leap of faith came after words of encouragement from band members, to whom she had spoken via e-mail following some family troubles.

The mother-of-two stayed in the town for more than a month before flying back to Melbourne on Sunday.

She brought with her two scrapbooks she put together as a fan in the 1970s, and gave them to Mr Phipps as a gift.

The band gave her a special mention at a Bristol gig in December and she was surprised people she spoke to in England were unaware they still existed.

"They've always been a great band in their own right, but it gets lost because of the coverage about Gary Glitter," said the retail worker, before she headed home.

"There's no association with him and people over here need to realise that, as they're a part of British music history.

"The sad part for me is they've been forgotten – whenever you mention the band people here just say 'Gary Glitter'.

"But they had some huge hits in their own right.

"They're all really lovely guys and a fantastic band still, and without their encouragement I wouldn't be here.

"People are all so lovely here in Tunbridge Wells too.

"I love it and don't want to go back."
