Fingers severed in sword attack
A 28-YEAR-OLD father faces hours of reconstructive surgery after two of his fingers were severed in a sword attack.
It is believed the man was attacked with a samurai-style weapon in The Meads Avenue, Quinton on Friday.
Police and ambulance crews were called at about 5pm and were confronted with a gory scene.
A woman, who was visiting friends in the area at the time, said: "The kids were there and there was blood everywhere. That's not a very nice thing for kids to see, I think they are quite young.
"Apparently his fingers weren't cut completely off, they were just hanging off. Somebody did first aid – they told him to hold his arm up and somebody else got ice. I don't know what it was over."
The victim, who is believed to be known by the nickname "Wormy", was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham before being transferred to Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, which specialises in reconstructive surgery.
A police spokesman confirmed he had been injured by what she described as "a large knife".
A young woman, who arrived after the attack, saw the victim before he was taken to hospital.
She said: "He was very angry with the person who sliced his hand open, especially as he did it in front of his kids."
Father and son, David John Penfold, 60, of Bell Farm Lane, Minster, and Danny Penfold, 39, of Lapwing Close, Minster, have been charged with wounding with intent.
After a brief appearance at Sittingbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday, the case was sent to Maidstone Crown Court. The pair are scheduled to appear there on Monday, July 19.
David John Penfold was released on conditional bail but his son has been remanded in custody.
