MARTIN Brockman's dream came true when he was on Tuesday named in the England team competing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi

The 22-year-old Medway and Maidstone athlete will line up in the decathlon.

He actually received the news last Thursday from Darrell Bunn, the national head coach for combined events.

"It came in a phone call when he simply said 'you're in'. I've been working towards this for a number of years and it's going to be a fantastic experience," said Brockman.

Selection owed everything to his performance at the North West Combined Events Open event which took place in Manchester a few days earlier.

For the Maidstone-born athlete it was a last chance to gain the qualifying standard of 7300 points

He had already clocked a personal best in the 100 (11.35) and matched his top high jump (2.10) before being made aware, with two disciplines remaining, that he would have to produce PB's in both to have a chance of bettering the 7429 total of Edward Dunford (Birchfield Harriers) who at the time was the third-ranked decathlete in England.

Brockman's response? He first threw the javelin 50.08 metres (previous best: 48.99) and then ran the 1500 in 4:26.90 (4:29.13) for a magnificent total of 7433. That was also a personal best and it earned him a plane ticket to India.

"To be honest my first reaction was fear about going," he added, "but now I'm really looking forward to it.

"Chris Bowman, my coach, will be there, and it certainly makes all of his hard work and that of my physio Mark Heffernan worth while.

"I can't promise anything except to say I would hope to finish as high as possible."

The Games take place from the first week in October and Martin, whose own coaching exploits are well known since he guides the likes of Frances Lammas, Tom Howlett and Francesca Baylis, will be the first member of M&M (or Medway AC) in the competition since 1998 when Kirsty Morrison, then also 22, won a javelin bronze in Kuala Lumpur.
