Election in 'apathetic' village is scrapped
ELECTIONS for parish councillors in Hawkhurst have been scrapped because of a lack of interest.
Chairman of the village's parish council Keith Brown told the Courier he was left "extremely disappointed" after just 11 candidates had applied to fill 13 vacancies.

He said: "To have such a low number up for these 13 seats is unheard of. It is across the field, but one has to ask, why?"
To trigger an election, which had been scheduled to take place yesterday (Thursday), entries were required from more than 13 people.

But because this number has not been reached councillors are set to retain their roles unopposed.
In another indication of how residents were growing increasingly disinterested in local politics, Mr Brown said just two of the candidates were not existing members.
"I have been with the parish council since 1992 and this is absolutely the most apathetic response," he said.
"It is so very sad. Whether it's the pressures of modern life and people haven't got the patience for this type of role I just don't know."
