Dynamos lift ice hockey crown again
TWO goals in a man of the match performance from Andy Smith helped Invicta Dynamos clinch the ENIHL Southern Championship on Saturday evening. They knew one more point would seal the crown and made no mistake by seeing off Wightlink Raiders 5-2.
Neither side were able to draw blood early and it took until the final minute of the first period for the deadlock to be broken as Nicky Lewis, so often the thorn in the Raiders' side in previous meetings, steered the puck past Toby Cooley from close range.
The Raiders came out fighting in the second session and enjoyed the better of the chances, with only a string of stunning saves from Invicta netminder Shane Kemp keeping them at bay.
Two disallowed goals infuriated the home side and their frustration only increased when Lewis fired in his second of the evening with his team shorthanded to make it 2-0 at the second break.
The visitors finally answered through Jeremy Cornish in the opening two minutes of the final session, but the Dynamos were quick to re-establish the two goal cushion with Tim Smith finding the net from the blue line.
Four minutes later that lead was extended as Andy Smith drove home a venomous slapshot from the edge of the offensive zone to make it 4-1 and while Raiders player-coach Cornish fired in his second of the night, a fantastic solo goal from Smith kept the islanders at arms length and put the issue beyond all doubt.
A fantastic team display enabled Invicta to celebrate their title in style, on Sunday night.
They walloped the likely runners up, Cardiff ENL Devils, 10-4 to put down a marker before the play-offs.
Having secured the championship the night before they obtained revenge against a side which had previously inflicted two road defeats on them. The Devils took a 1-0 lead nine minutes from the break through Chris Jones while his side were shorthanded, but the goal spurred the Dynamos into action and Elliot Andrews tied it up with a close range finish before Nicky Lewis put the home team ahead by following up on AJ Smith's long shot.
Andy Smith followed suit soon after as he found himself in the right place to bury a rebound and make it 3-1 but Cardiff pulled one back instantly with Stephen Deacon firing in from the back post.
The Dynamos had the last word in the period, though, as Andy Smith lifted over Mike Brabon to give them a 4-2 lead by the break.
In the second frame Peter Vaisanen left the Devils' defence standing to score a fantastic solo effort and increase the lead to three before Loyde Fuller made the gap even bigger with a pinpoint finish from the edge of the crease.
Cardiff answered through Gareth Dixon (6-3) and the goalscoring then briefly halted as Vaisanen and Phil Manny tussled away from the play. When the action restarted Andy Smith capitalised on an error from Mike Brabon to add another to the Dynamos' tally before Alan Armour's late The home side were dominant and they extended their advantage with an exceptional goal from Joe Johnston before Andrews grabbed his second of the evening and Johnston completed the rout with another goal six minutes from time.
