COMPLAINTS about car clampers marred the success of Carter's Steam Fair's visit to Margate's Dreamland for the bank holiday weekend.

Some motorists whose cars were clamped by CSS Parking Solutions complained the £120 fees to have clamps removed were unfair and excessive.

A spokesman for the Margate Town Centre Regeneration Trust, which owns the car park and allows CSS to operate, said the trust would look into any complaints.

He added the steam fair was allowed to operate for free and the trust fully supported the regeneration of Margate and the work of organisers the Dreamland Trust.

Some drivers became so irate that police were called to manage the situation.

Jonathan Bryant, director of the Dreamland Trust, said: "It was a truly fantastic occasion. Dreamland Trust was delighted to bring this classic fair to Margate and see so many thousands of people enjoying the very special experience. We have received countless comments and thanks from satisfied customers.

"My personal thanks go to Anna Carter, and to the current site owner Margate Town Centre Regeneration Company Ltd for use of the ground.

"I was very disappointed to learn that some visitors experienced difficulty when using the car park and enforcement of the regulations may have been over-zealous in some cases.

"The car park owner is equally concerned to hear of the difficulties. The company's representative agrees there is no place for over-aggressive clamping. Any legitimate complaints can be sent to Peter Beck, Margate Town Centre Regeneration Co Ltd, 147 Stamford Hill, London."
