TRAIN services to London have "never been so poor", according to commuters who think the new high speed rail link has made things worse.

Although passengers have faced long delays due to snow and ice over the past month they say services are sub par whatever the weather. Complaints include over crowded trains, rude employees, dirty carriages, broken down heaters and delayed and cancelled services.

London broker John Clack, from Bishopstone Drive, Herne Bay, criticised the new high speed services to St Pancras in London.

He said: "It's never been so poor. Southeastern Trains have degraded regular services in favour of the high speed trains. Why would I want to go to St Pancras when my work is two minutes from Canon Street?"

Many people working in London's financial district have similar complaints.

London Stock Exchange worker John Nicholson, said trains were a "disgrace".

He told the Times: "I think this is theft on a grand scale and the services provided are a disgrace. The condition of the trains is shocking.

"The high speed rail link is a huge backwards leap in commuter travel.

"The time difference in travelling from Herne Bay to St Pancras is lost when you consider that I would have to travel back to Cannon Street by tube."

Commuter Tee Jay Voller, who works in the financial district, agreed.

She said: "It doesn't go where I want to go and we have to pay for it. The trains are dirty, smelly and late."

Herne Bay councillor, Peter Lee, has been commuting to London for 30 years.

He said: "The train services have been going downhill all the way. The new services are not useful for the vast majority of users."

A spokesman for Southeastern Trains said services had actually improved on the line from Herne Bay and Whitstable via Faversham.

He said: "As of 13 December we introduced a new timetable which affected the timing of every train across the network and saw the start of high speed services. In that original specification Herne Bay was actually supposed to see a reduction in the number of services. Following research and consultation with local stakeholders, Southeastern has reinstated some peak time Canon Street services into the new timetable."

“I have been monitoring SE Trains performance for all of 2009 and recorded every train I have been on. I can confirm that the average over the year for trains running within 5mins of the time is 50.58%. Only 32 out of 398 I caught were exactly ON TIME. The figures since the timetable change are considerably worse. In 2010 to date only 9 have run within 5 mins and only 2 ON TIME. That makes a shocking 10% punctuality. In the commons yesterday Chris Mole spewed out figures of 93% overall for 2009 and is only down to 91% NOW because of the snow days when performance dropped. Even SETrains report lower than this but still within their threshold of the Passengers Charter. This is a document that DOES NOT serve Passengers at all, written of course by the DfT, a government body. Keep the faith, KEEP THE CAMPAIGN ALIVE.”

“I totally agree with all the comments made by other commuters. The trains are rarely on time or heated. When you complain about this you are given the same old excuses i.e. congestion at London Bridge, signal failure, broken heaters etc. The fact that they say our trains run fast from Chatham to London Bridge is laughable as they rarely run fast and are almost always late. Why does it now take the 17.30 from Cannon Street over 20 mins to reach Chislehurst on its supposed fast route from London when in the past it took roughly 13 mins.
The high speed train is pointless to most communters not only does it cost more money but it only saves 10 mins into London but then the majority of us who work in the city would need to get a tube which takes more time and costs more money. Maybe they should have spent some of the money that they have wasted on the high speed train on improving the services they already run. No one wants the high speed service and as far as I can see no one uses it. All we are asking for is a good service for the money we pay. I have commuted from Herne Bay into Cannon Street for 8 years since my move there and the service has been getting worse yearly and costing more.”

“The new timetable into London clearly isn't working. Most people cannot afford the 50% increase in ticket price to use HS1. The result is that with less trains, there is now more overcrowding than ever before. Today, I saw two women faint on the train as a direct result of overcrowding one of whom was pregnant. This is an absolute scandal and Sotheastern should be held liable if someone were to suffer medical complications.”

“Since SE Trains have implemented the laughable High Speed Services that nobody is using, the mainline services have been shambolic. They are regularly late, have not been cleaned and rarely have the heating on. We know this is a cynical attempt to force us onto the St Pancras line. They need to get this through their thick skulls - We do not want to go to St Pancras. We moved out here because we work in the City or Victoria. It isn't rocket science to figure out where we need to be in order to get to work.”

“I total agree with the comments made. Ever since the High Speed has come into service on our line our service has suffered. The fact that the trains are late to London and home again only adds to the over crowding that we also see on this route. Not sure how Southeastern are allowed to get away with this kind of service but it appears no one at Southeastern is able to give a straight answer and sort out their own mess. Southeastern need to have their contract revoked and it given to someone that gives a damn about their clients. I have keep notes about that services I have used since the new year and there has only been one day so far where we have made it to Cannon street on time and home again.”
