Delays for drivers in Medway and Sittingbourne as wide load is transported
THE second of four massive generators will be transported from Chatham Docks to Kemsley substation in Sittingbourne this weekend.
Motorists travelling between Medway and Sittingbourne via the A249 are advised to expect delays overnight on Friday, February 26 and if possible find an alternative route.
Police will be escorting a lorry carrying a 428 ton generator from Chatham Docks to a site off Ypres Drive, Kemsley.
This will happen in two stages. The first will be overnight on Friday, February 26 from Chatham to Sittingbourne and the second stage is on Sunday, February 28 to its destination at Kemsley substation.
The trailer is too big to allow traffic to pass while it is moving.
The convoy will leave Chatham Docks at approximately 10pm and travel along the A289 including Pier Road, Gads Hill,
Danes Hill, Yokosuka Way and Ito Way.
The load will then travel along the A278 Hoath Way towards junction four of the M2.
When it reaches the Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre roundabout it will have to reverse along the rest of Hoath Way along the opposite carriageway. During this time no traffic will be allowed on or off at junction four of the M2.
That manouevre is expected this will take about two hours.
It will then come off the M2 at junction three towards Blue Bell Hill before joining the M20 which it then leaves at junction seven, headed for Detling Hill.
It will then travel along the A249 and come off at the junction for Iwade where it will stop along Sheppey Way. This is expected to be during the early hours of Saturday, February 27.
The second stage movement will start at 2pm on Sunday, February 28 at Sheppey Way, Iwade where the load will be escorted back down the A249 and come off at the junction for Kemsley substation.
It will then turn left at the roundabout towards its destination just off Ypres Drive.
