ANGHARAD Ward, 16, from Paddock Wood, has been selected by the British Olympic Association to represent Great Britain in the curling event at the first Winter Youth Olympic Games, at Innsbruck, Austria, in January.

Angharad, who attends Walthamstow Hall School, Sevenoaks, and is a member of the South of England Curling Club, plays at Fenton's Rink, Dundale Road, Tunbridge Wells, the only curling centre in England.

She has just returned from representing England in the European Championships, at Moscow, where she became the youngest curler to have represented England at full international level, and she is now the first curler from England to have been selected for Great Britain.

She said: "This is such an amazing opportunity to play for Team GB and compete against the best young athletes in the world. To be part of the Olympic experience is just a dream come true."

The Winter Youth Olympic Games is a new event designed to inspire young people all around the world to play sport and adopt and live by the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship.

As well as playing with her British colleagues, Angharad will play a competition partnering a player from another country, whose identity will not be known until the first half of the competition is over.

Angharad moved to Kent in 2010 from Canada, where she had been playing curling since the age of 11 and she was delighted to find easy access to a top-class curling venue just minutes from her new home.
