FIFTY members of Kearsney Bowls Club took part in the seven-week Will Rhodes - a competition staged to honour the memory of long-serving member Will Rhodes.

The final was a close run affair as Keith Hughes, Edward Gibbs, Fred Williams and Ann Goldsmith led most of the way.

At nine ends, Ann's rink were three up, but going into the final end that had shrunk to just a single shot with the score then 14-13.

But opponents Leslie Beardsell, Bob Hearn, Peter Olpin and skip Muzz Law squared the match before Law got draw in another shot to give his side a dramatic 15-14 win.

This cliffhanger of a game was watched by a packed clubhouse and surrounding green.

Presentations were made by the club president Barbara Fittal who thanked all who had helped make this event a resounding success over the seven weeks.

GATEWAY Bowls Club staged their annual open mixed triples Coronation Cup tournament sponsored by Carlsberg last weekend and in spite of the weather on Sunday there was a great weekend's bowling.

With Saturdays group winners playing for the Coronation Cup and the rest playing for the Plate on Sunday, the winners were - as last year - Sue Scott, Bob Scott, and Roger Langley.

Rogers' triple beat Janet Hudson, Ken Fox and Dave Hudson in the final. Paul, Steve and Lyn Smith of Kearsney were third and Brenda Sheather, Dave Butcher and Dave Philpott (River) fourth.

In the plate Hazel Deakin, Pat Simmonds and Malcolm Deakin of Kearsney were the winners, beating Freda Smith, Bernie Williams and Malcolm Smith (also of Kearsney) in the final. Pam Norris, John Avis and David Langley were third and Ashford Town's Peter Balsom, Eddie Taylor and Lin Taylor fourth.

GATEWAY won the inaugural Dennis Chatwin Memorial Trophy against River, a trophy presented by Dennis's wife Mary to commemorate her late husband's bowls career with the two Dover clubs. A raffle raised £100 for the Pilgrims Hospice.
