Children ask celebrities to back their 2012 plans

PUPILS from Class 12, Year 5 at Holy Trinity and St John's school, Margate, have been in touch with celebrities asking for support ahead of the London Games.

Class teacher Paul Ursell set the pupils, aged nine and ten, the task of writing to well-known people asking them to back the class in their efforts to prepare for the Olympic Games.

Lord Sebastian Coe, The Mayor of London Boris Johnston, author Michael Morpurgo, Her Majesty The Queen, and the Prime Minister David Cameron are among the figures to have replied, congratulating them on their letters and their plans for the Games.

JK Rowling, Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and Prince Charles all sent photographs with their responses. Rolf Harris returned an original cartoon of himself in training for the Olympics, along with a signed photograph.

Mr Ursell said: "I am really proud of what the class has done in literacy this year. It is great to see how persuasive they can be in their writing.

"I am sure these personal responses will help the children have some unique memories from having the Olympics in our country."
