The class were also presented with certificates for completing Swale Gloves bronze awards, a course which gives youngsters a great insight into the basics of amateur boxing.

Novices head coach Ray Clifford said: "This young class has become very popular this year. We have youngsters from five to 10 and they all put a tremendous effort in and deserve their medals and trophies."

Winners of awards in the advanced class, which caters for boxers over 10, were: Most improved male: Jason Taylor; Most improved female: Chloe Gaynor; Best newcomer: Ryan Turner; Endeavour: Reece Lewis; Club person: Kayleigh Taylor; Best performance: Ryan Abbott and James Linnaine; Female of the year: Jodie Taylor; Male of the year: Jamie Weightman.

Three awards given by the club committee for outstanding achievement went to Sharnelle Gaynor, Jodie Taylor and Kayleigh Taylor who all reached English championships finals in May. Sharnelle and Jodie won gold medals and Kayleigh a silver.

The club had an outstanding year in competitions, taking part in 47 bouts and winning 42 of them.

Club chairman Paul Williams said: "We've really put ourselves on the map this year with the results we've had.

"We boxed all around the country and achieved great standards for a young club.

"Obviously gaining two English champions is the highlight but every boxer in the gym has performed tremendously and we are now looking forward to the new season."

A final award was given to local councillors Brenda Simpson and Sue Gent.

They were awarded the Joe Schembri memorial shield for outstanding contribution – both have been a great help in securing funding for the club.
