A CAT suffering from inhaling smoke was given oxygen by firefighters after being rescued from a blazing house in Broadstairs.

The pet was taken to a vet as a precaution after the fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Forty firefighters were sent to tackle the fire in a large detached home in Lanthorne Road just before 12.30pm, after a passer-by spotted smoke pouring from the roof.

At the fire's height, six fire appliances from Whitstable, Ramsgate, Margate, Eastry and Sturry, an aerial appliance and a command support unit also attended.

The first crews on the scene fought extremely hard to confine the fire to one area of the roof and prevented it from spreading through the entire void.

While one team of firefighters tackled the fire in the roof, crews in breathing entered the building and carried out a salvage operation on the ground and first floor.

The incident was scaled down to three fire appliances at 2.15pm and tactical firefighting operations ceased half an hour later.

Firefighters are currently checking for and extinguishing any hotspots and ventilating the heavily smoke-logged home.

“The house above is named Tait House. I lived there for 12 years between 1970 and 1982 and am very saddened by the news of the fire. My best wishes go out to the Cagney family who have lost their beatiful home. I hope my old bedroom survived the inferno!”
