A MAN has described the shock he felt when he showed up for work to find a car had smashed through the front window of his shop.

A silver Volkswagen hit a set of traffic lights before crashing through Anglian Home Improvements in Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, at 4.30am on Thursday, January 19.

Area sales manager Martin Savill arrived at work to discover the damage.

He said: "I thought: 'Oh my gosh, what has happened here?'

"It seems the car had skidded out of control and crashed into the traffic lights and gone through the window.

"It wasn't exactly the best start to the day. It was a right mess."

The window had been boarded up before Mr Savill arrived, but the front entrance could take three weeks to repair.

"Luckily we don't rely too much on passing trade but we probably won't get a customer in here until the window is replaced," added Mr Savill.

The traffic lights and pedestrian crossings on the corner of Upper Grosvenor Road and Grosvenor Road had to be switched off all day on Thursday while engineers fixed the damaged post.

The driver, from south London, was uninjured. Police put the accident down to icy conditions.
