Society chairman Jocelyn McCarthy said: "What we want to do is encourage volunteers to pick up litter and keep the streets clean.

"We have got in touch with Kent County Council and Thanet council and we hope they will get behind us and we will be getting in touch with residents' associations in the town to get involved."

The idea for the campaign, which is in its early stages, was first mooted at a meeting of the Ramsgate Society before Christmas.

Mr McCarthy said: "The aim is to get people together for clean-ups where we can target areas of the town.

"We want as many people as possible to get involved.

"Soon spring will be here and people will start visiting Ramsgate and it needs to look good.

"We have the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee this year and it would be good to have the town looking at its best."

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be on June 4.

There will be bank holidays on June 4 and 5 to mark the occasion, meaning more visitors to Thanet could be anticipated.

There will be a meeting on April 13 at Chatham House School in Ramsgate where the campaign to clean up the town will be launched.
