Bowls

ON A beautiful day for bowls, Sevenoaks Bowling Club (Outdoors) held their annual Jubilee Trophy competition, which for the first time consisted of mixed triples rather than, as previously, women's triples.

Two groups of four teams were competing, with the winner of each proceeding to the final played over seven ends. The scoring was based on ends won, rather than shots scored, and this produced some very close situations within each group.

The winners by five to two ends were Barbara Ide, Mike McDonald and skip Bob Briley over their opponents, Gillian Evans, Doris Chapman and skip Michael Chapman.

The trophy was presented by the club president.

Sevenoaks will be represented this year at the Kent County Women's Bowling Association Divisional Finals by Geraldine Manning in the unbadged singles (Maude Wood) and she will be joined by Barbara Ide in the pairs.

The finals will take place, at Bromley, on Sunday.

The club's successful runs in the National Two Fours and the National Top Club competitions came to a halt with defeats in both against Maidstone BC.

In the Fours, K Pearce, E Mitchell, D Lewington and skip D Henning were always in control and won by 27-14.

On the other rink, M McDonald, J Hamill, T Seabrook and skip T Russell were always in arrears, but kept within striking distance until the 18th end when they conceded four shots and eventually acknowledged defeat by 13.

With the match score tied, an extra end was played to decide the outcome, and this went in favour of the visitors by one shot.

In the Top Club match, Sevenoaks took a two-games-to-nil lead with D Henning winning the Four Wood Singles by 21-15 and K Pearce winning the Two Wood Singles by 17-11. In the Pairs, M McDonald and D Lewington trailed by 21-7, but a winning run of four ends brought them to within five shots of their opponents, who nevertheless retained the initiative to win by six shots. The triples skipped by T Russell were always fighting to stay in the match, but lost by 13 shots.

With the match score standing at two games to each side, attention switched to the fours involving J Barnacle, J Talbot, R Aldred and skip T Seabrook.

This was a very close encounter with Sevenoaks establishing an early lead, which they maintained until the 14th end. Thereafter, the Maidstone four took control and ensured that after an absorbing match their club went through to the next round.

They now play the winners of Division 1A on Saturday, at Bromley, for a place in the Kent semi-finals.

Laurie Turner, of Sevenoaks Indoor Bowling Club, will be off to Nottingham during July 15-19 to represent Disability Bowls England in an international fixture against Scotland.
