A 'REAL foodie' who enjoys cooking, cricket and gardening has been unveiled as the new Bishop in Canterbury and Bishop of Dover.

With a keen interest in rural affairs, Bishop Trevor Willmott was introduced to his new parishioners by the Archbishop, Dr Rowan Williams, at Chalk Pitt Farm in Bekesbourne today (Monday).

He was welcomed by farmers Amanda and Mike Barker and their youngest son Harry with a garland of Kentish hops.

Called a wise and reflective person by the Archbishop, Bishop Trevor was also described as 'a lovely man' by Amanda.

She said: "He has a background in rural issues and the Diocese chose our farm to announce his appointment partly, I think, as it has become a focal point for our local community.

"He and his wife came and had coffee with us before the press conference and they seem to be a lovely couple."

Formally the Bishop of Basingstoke but also a past chaplain in both Oslo and Naples, Bishop Trevor is married to Margaret, a school finance consultant, with one daughter Elizabeth, an hydrogeologist.

As Bishop in Canterbury, the bishop will be expected to take responsibility for the Diocese on behalf of the Archbishop when needed.

The bishop told journalists that apart from working with the people of Kent he was keen to try Whitstable oysters and would spend many happy hours following the progress of Kent Cricket Club.

Bishop Trevor will be installed and welcomed as Bishop of Dover and Bishop in Canterbury on Saturday, February 6 at Canterbury Cathedral.
