SUPPORT for the Kent and Sussex Courier's Save Our Bandstand petition has snowballed and is fast approaching the 2,000 mark.

Tunbridge Wells residents have united to join the campaign to save the Calverley Grounds bandstand since its launch three weeks ago.

At the time of going to press just under 1,800 people had put their names on the list to keep the popular landmark.

And that number keeps on growing as the groundswell of public opinion against its demolition strengthens.

The historic focal point could disappear forever if Tunbridge Wells Borough Council forges ahead with plans to bulldoze.

Last week we reported an anonymous benefactor could come forward with a substantial amount of money to save the bandstand.

The council's portfolio holder for leisure James Scholes said: "The next step is for them to have a confidential meeting with the town hall and we will have to wait and see what happens from that.

"A proper cost analysis needs to be looked into so we know what kind of budget we are looking at, then we can take it from there."

The results of a structural survey are pending before a planning application to dismantle the structure and flatten out the area is lodged in a matter of weeks.

There will then be a 21-day window for people to submit their views before the council's planning committee decides.

If you want to see the landmark preserved in the short-term and restored in the longer term to an inspiring structure of which the town can be proud, add your name now to our Save Our Bandstand petition on www.thisiskent.co.uk/ bandstand petition or fill in the form.

Our petition will be presented to the council's planning department as an official objection to the plans.
