LEE Barnett's club record sequence of goals in successive Chatham games came to an end at Wodson Park on Saturday.

But he still played a massive part in helping his team continue the run of success that puts them top of the current form table.

Chats had most of the possession in the opening minutes, but Ware had the game's first real shot after four minutes and keeper James Platten made a splendid save.

Justin Ascheri and Michael Dodsworth both went close, but the goals wouldn't come and it was the home side, instead, who went ahead on 29 minutes - against the run of play and after a piece of poor defending.

Whatever manager Steve Binks said at the interval appeared to work because the visitors controlled the second period from the outset.

They had what looked like justified appeals for a penalty turned down and although they had most of the possession the reward proved elusive until Barnett's corner found its way to Richard Avery, unmarked on the far side of the penalty area, and he headed home to level the scores on 72 minutes.

Eight minutes later and the game was effectively won and lost.

Barnett found sub Mark Brooks, who chipped the ball over the keeper's head, but although the ball dropped just over, Brooks did get the last touch to a Byron Walker shot as 1-1 became 2-1.

Chats had a bit of defending to do in the closing stages, but the defence held firm and Justin Ascheri twice went close to increasing the lead in injury time.
