Asperger sufferer admits cash card theft from friend
AN AUTISTIC man from Tunbridge Wells could face prison for stealing his friend's bank card and taking out £120 from his account.
Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court heard on Friday how 22-year-old Michael Funnell, of Addison Road, invited a group of friends around to his house for a party on March 6.
He took their coats to hang them up and when Steve Goodwin's back was turned, took his bank card, before withdrawing £120 from a cash point.
He had memorised his friend's PIN when with him a couple of days before.
Lorrayne Symoir, prosecuting, said: "It was not noticed until March 10 when Goodwin's card was declined in Blockbuster. He contacted his bank and they said cash was taken out at 5.50pm on the day of the party."
Funnell admitted to the two counts of theft – one of the card and one of the cash. He also admitted a further charge of stealing a purse on April 21.
Brian Ferris, defending, said: "I am told my client has Asperger's syndrome. He can offer no explanation as to why he steals in this way."
The court also heard Funnell was due to be sentenced for "various other matters" on July 30, so District Judge Michael Kelly agreed to adjourn sentencing until that date. Judge Kelly said: "You are bailed unconditionally in this case, but I understand you have conditions on other matters."
