A STREET artist has been brightening up parts of Margate Old Town.

The stencils of birds, farm animals and artist Tracey Emin, which have appeared on walls, are the work of "Stewy" – Thanet's answer to the famous Banksy whose works in London have become collectors' items.

The life-size stencils of common British animals and icons have appeared on city streets across the UK and started to spring up in Margate after Tracey Emin's exhibition opened this month.

The enigmatic pictures are not graffiti and the mysterious artist always asks permission before spraying.

Shopkeepers have welcomed the artist and allowed him to tag their premises with his trademark images.

Andrew Davidson of Paraphernalia said: "Someone came to ask permission to put a pig on the shop front and passers-by often stop to take pictures. It's wonderful."

Roxana Tesla of indoor community market Rough Trade said: "His agent came in to ask if he could do something on our entrance and we were thrilled as his work is well-known across London."

The artist is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s but like trailblazing street artist Banksy, Stewy likes to keep his identity under wraps.
