Police interviewing Tunbridge Wells stand-off arrest man
Police are interviewing a man they arrested yesterday after an 18-hour stand-off in Tunbridge Wells.
Officers armed with tasers smashed their way into the flat in Crescent Road at 5.30pm last night and arrested a man who had barricaded himself inside.
-
Tunbridge Wells commander Chief Insp Martin Wilson said today: "I am
very satisified that this incident was concluded without any injuries
and minimum disruption to the town centre.
"He is still in custody and we will be working with mental health services to carry out an assessment throughout the day."
The early evening drama brought to an end an incident that began at 11.30pm on Monday.
Police were called when a member of the public reported a disturbance at the flat above antique shop TJ Twiddy on Crescent Road.
Armed police arrived a couple of hours later after furniture was thrown onto the street.
Neighbours also reported the smell of burning coming from the flat.
A dozen armed officers and a team of police negotiators spent all day at the scene.
Some nearby residents were moved out of their homes as a precaution.
Members of the man's family were also brought to the scene in a bid to persuade him to give himself up.
But eventually police decided the situation could not be allowed to continue and went in shortly after 5.30pm.
After throwing items onto the street which he had used to barricade himself inside, loud firecracker-type devices were used to disorientate the man and he was brought out safely.

“How about another national database to determine how each and every individual would deal with this type of situation? Maybe all the anonymous hand-wringers that are so unhappy with the way things are dealt with would then concentrate on their own lives instead of others. So what if the emergency services took 18 hours to end the "siege", the important thing is the gentleman removed from the scene is safe and in the process of getting the help he desperately needs. Yes, I got caught up in the traffic on Monday morning and it was a little inconvenient, a small price to pay if it means a mother/father/brother etc has been saved from organising a funeral for a family member. Mental illness can happen to anyone at any time, and if I ever become unwell like the gentleman on Monday I would choose the common sense used by the emergency services over your gung-ho views without a second thought. Finally, if any of the gentleman's family are reading this I wish him a speedy recovery.”

“I do hope the Newspaper don't dedicate pages and pages to this story. I think some decency and restraint is required when reporting on people regards mental health. The family will obviously have been through enough without the intrusion of the press never mind the thoughtless opinions of some on this post.”

“Please can the administrator of this website remove all these comments, I agree that this is just abusing the online service. If you have nothing constructive to say then don't say it. I am amazed sometimes at the comments on this website, we had the same issues with the fight in High Brooms outside the working men¿s club and it was just constant rubbish filling up the comments section.
PLEASE remove this and review how you add these comments in future maybe review them before they can be posted?”

“Wow, what a bunch of ill informed armchair critics we have wasting their days on this website!
What's happened? Has your work banned the Daily Mail comments section?!
So despite this whole episode having been resolved without anyone being hurt we've had criticism for the police, for the fire service, for the health service and even for the borough council despite them having absolutely no involvement in mental health!
I'm almost surprised that it isn't the fault of the government or the education system... Things usually are.
Get up out of your chair, switch off your computer and calm yourself down. Do something positive with your time, perhaps go and volunteer for a charity dealing with mental health problems. Or become a special constable, then you can find out what the police really do and maybe next time you won't come across like someone that bases their opinions on something an old bitter man on benefits would say after 7 pints in the local.”

“Just Saying, TWells:
Chief Insp Martin Wilson is not a graduate recruit. He actually has 21 years experience as a police officer, 20 of those in the Metropolitan police, including Scotland Yard.
The ticket scheme notifying car owners that their personal items are on show actually sounds like a great idea to me.
He's only trying to prevent crime, which is his job.
Suzy, you are absolutely spot on with that comment.
You only have to read the reply by "anon, Kent" to realise just how little they know.
It's sometimes scary what people believe when they read the papers like the Daily Mail.”

“Suzy
The Police will only consider you providing you are not a white heterosexual english male.
Thats the problem with the force these day because people are given the job on the basis of what they are not how well they would do the job.The serving and protecting part has been changed. It used to be protect and serve the public now its protect and serve the
establishment.I would join up and do a far better job than the current bunch of PC PCs but because I fall into the above group I am prevented from proving it.
I agree with flanners-it was farce from start to finish .”

“After reading all your comments, I honestly can not believe how many selfish, narrow minded and judgemental people there are in tunbridge wells. Stop, Think, and put yourself in his or his family's shoes.... then write a comment !!”

“Dear Lord there are some idiots in this town. A potentially dangerous situation was handled incredibly well by the police with nobody harmed, and all some people can do is moan. These are the types who write endless letters complaining to the local newspapers, which always seem to start "Why oh why oh why......" and go downhill from there.
I'm only surprised that none of these buffoons have yet tried to blame this on European Law / Immigrants / "Loony Lefties" or Teachers.
Utterly incredible how well everyone else thinks they would handle situations like this. Let them. Go on then, put your money where your mouth is and join the local Police and sort it all out. Except you wont, will you? You wont do a single thing to help in any way. You'll sit by the sidelines, eating your sandwiches and droning on how you could do it better. Except you'll never get off your arses to try.
I'm sure you're all pretty much perfect at your boring little safe desk jobs, too.
And no, I don't work for the police force - I couldn't do their job. And neither could you.”
