SCORES of angry Twitter posters have slammed easyJet for an ad poster which says "This year end up in Malaga not Margate."

Responses on Twitter have accused the airline of taking a "cheap shot" at the town with one posting saying the campaign could damage the Margate's image and set back all the work made to improve and promote the area.

On Facebook Thanet resident Peter Checksfield said: "Margate / Thanet has everything I want (haven't spent a night away from the place in over 6 years) " while a posting from Sara Bowers says: "Nothing on earth would tempt me to Malaga. I go to Margate quite regularly."

But others have agreed with the sentiment. One comment on the Isle of Thanet Gazette Facebook site says: "I'd think it's pretty well said. No one wants pigeons and a chilly wet breeze. They want sun....and cocktails."

“I must agree with* the resident* that there is not much to attract paying visitors as we get a lot of free loaders that just come and use the beach and bring their own food and entertainment. I feel that it has lost its attraction but I don't think that is the end of Margate it has to change its image and it is trying but there is no money and the councils have neglected it in the past if they could give Margate alternative routes so we link up with Brighton and other seaside communities then it might have a chance to regenerate fully.”

“Well I hate to say this as Margate is my home, but there is nothing here for visitors anymore. The once beautiful scenic area has changed dramatically since the 1980's.
Most of the Hotels and Guest houses have been exchanged for dark and squalid flats and bedsits or are boarded-up and derelict. There is a huge Refugee and European Gypsy Community living here on benefits. The streets are filthy, the beaches are filthy, the shops very poor. Sorry, I cannot think of anything nice to say no matter how hard I try.”
