Angels have play-off destiny in own hands
IF TONBRIDGE Angels do make the Ryman League play-offs, they will certainly have done it the hard way.
With four games to play in the coming week against fellow play-off rivals, which begins with their final home game against Boreham Wood tomorrow (Saturday), Angels have their destiny firmly in their own hands, but player fatigue could be an important factor when all is said and done.
After Boreham Wood, Angels travel to AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday, visit Wealdstone Thursday, and end their season at Aveley on Saturday.
And to think Premier League managers complain about fixture backlogs.
"I am aiming to win both of our home games this week so that will put us in a good position," Warrilow said, speaking before his side's game with Harrow Borough on Thursday evening.
"The good thing is that we have to play teams around us, rather than teams down the bottom, which is good. We tend to raise our game and play better against those teams.
"The atmosphere was great on Saturday at Horsham, the fans making lots of noise and the players on the pitch at the end clapping them.
"That is what we want for the last two home games. If we can get that for them and gets loads of people down there it will be a massive help.
"They (the team) will be giving 110 per cent and at the moment the mind-set of the lads is very good after the performance on Saturday.
"It is all about the results, that is the bottom line, so if we have to win ugly, then so be it. I have seen us play well against teams and not come away with anything so if we have to win ugly then I won't complain."
It has been a remarkable turnaround for Angels.
After the defeat to Bognor Regis Town on February 6, they occupied 19th place in the Ryman League and talk among the fans was more of staying in the division, rather than the play-offs.
That seemed to be a watershed moment in the season because since then, Angels have been on a tear.
Bar the Darford result, a 4-1 home defeat where the champions showed their class in the second half, after Angels led at the interval, Warrilow's outfit have probably been the form horses of the league. Ten wins, two draws and that loss against Dartford have catapulted Angels firmly into the play-off picture.
"I am not sure people appreciate the run we are on," Warrilow said.
"That is 11 league games without a defeat, nine wins and we have only conceded four goals. "There will be plenty of twists and turns, because all the teams in with a chance of a play-off spot have to play each other. I don't want it to go to the wire, but if we have to then I won't be panicking."
Barring any injuries picked up from last night's match against Harrow, Warrilow has nearly a full squad to choose from for the Boreham Wood clash. Adam Burchall is the only player missing, due to his two-week suspension, which began on Monday. Lee Minshull returns from his three-match ban for the run-in, but Scott Kinch will miss the Hornchurch and Wealdstone clashes due to suspension. Meshach Nugent (out since early March) and Kirk Watts (back problem) could be named on the bench. Jerhal Hughes has left the club by mutual consent and is now playing for Sussex County League side Whitehawk.
