Tonbridge Angels: 2

Bury Town: 3

AFTER Tuesday evening's debacle, Tonbridge Angels manager Tommy Warrilow has demanded his players grow up and take some responsibility for their actions.

Angels cruised into a two-goal lead thanks to Paul Booth's double against Bury Town, not the NPower League 2 outfit from Manchester, but the newly promoted side from Zamaretto League Midland Division.

However, the home side's second half performance was totally woeful – it was as if they forgot what had given them their two-goal lead – and Sam and Lee Reed cashed in, as the Suffolk side came away with all three points.

"I can't defend the players, I did on Saturday, but that simply wasn't good enough," Warrilow said.

"I couldn't quite believe what I saw in the second half myself, we seemed to panic once the first goal went in.

"In the first half we used the ball well and stretched the play. Jake Beecroft, who has been outstanding for me, saw a lot of the ball, but how many times did he touch the ball in the second half?

"I know it is early in the season, but I am not going to let it go on and I want the players to show a bit of drive and desire. I am looking for them to grow up and take some responsibility – they know where they should be on the pitch and at set pieces. It is time for them to start doing it."

After the Billericay defeat, Warrilow rung the changes and also reverted to a different formation. Out went Jay May, Seb Barton, who was only in the team for one match, Kirk Watts and Matt Hollyoak. In came Liam Harwood, Lee Worgan, Paul Booth and Paul Semakula as Angels went to a 3-5-2 formation.

It was clear from the outset that the visitors would look to frustrate Angels and play on the break. When teams adopt this approach, which will probably be a common sight at the Longmead this season, it is essential that Angels play with width and pace.

Both Jon Heath and Jake Beecroft, playing as wing-backs, provided Angels with width and got forward at every opportunity, which helped the home side exert their dominance in the first half.

Frannie Collin forced Marcus Garnham into tipping over his curling shot and Worgan also had to be alert to push Kieran Leabon's glancing header behind for a corner.

Booth, who was one of the bright spots alongside Collin in attack, then scored his first goals of the season, just when it looked as if Angels would go in at the break on level terms.

Lee Browning played a lovely give and go with Collin, after fine passing by Beecroft and Jacob Mingle, and he was upended by Michael Steward's clumsy challenge. Booth stepped up to send Garnham the wrong way and just 79 seconds later, he had his second.

A long ball through the centre of the Bury defence found the striker and he fired past the helpless Garnham.

Whatever happened at the break is anyone's guess, but Angels were simply woeful in the second half – they didn't create a single clear-cut chance and stopped doing the basics. Mingle gave away a cheap free-kick on the edge of the area and Sam Reed curled the ball round the wall in the 50th minute – this was to be the start of the collapse.

With their tails up, Bury equalised in the 62nd minute. Mark Coulson slid the ball through to a totally unmarked Lee Reed, who finished excellently with his left-foot. A deathly silence fell over the Longmead and with ten minutes to play, the unthinkable happened.

Callum Kearns was given the freedom of the Longmead and spotted, once again, an unmarked Sam Reed on the right. He found his fellow midfielder and Reed finished low under Worgan.

Warrilow said he would be targeting two wins from the Harrow Borough and Folkestone Invicta matches, Saturday (home) and Monday (away, 3pm) respectively, but admitted neither game is easy. How much more positive would it be if every Angels fan could wake up on Tuesday morning and see their team sitting in mid-table with six points?
