PLANS to install three advertising signs on a Pembury roundabout were refused because they would "endanger highway safety".

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council turned down the application to place three non-illuminated sponsorship signs at the top of the southbound slip road on Pembury Road because the size and siting could cause a distraction to drivers.

Applicant Marketing Force has lodged an appeal with the planning inspectorate.

The borough council also refused the application, which was originally lodged in June, because the signs would cause a "proliferation and clutter of signage".

“The Royal Tunbridge Wells Town Forum supports the Council in the subject matter of refusing to allow permission for advertising on or even near this roundabout.

The refusal based upon road safety is entirely correct. A roundabout and its close proximity is a most dangerous area as you have cars coming from all angles.

The sooner this daft idea of placing adverts on roundabouts is discontinued the better. Personally I would not want someone observing an advert while piling into the rear of my car, or any other for that matter.

We trust that KCC will also realise that it is not appropriate to place such adverts on any roundabout, which we suspect is the driver behind such a request, as they too had placed such adverts at stupid positions, which subsequently had to be removed.

    Well done TWBC!!!!
